L uses his skills to detect a person's nature and true understanding. When L uses his ability he would be able to gain knowledge of one person who entered that area, which he would get recieve information of that person in the beginning of the Day round, he can later keep it with him or publise it. L can later choose to spare or arrest the seen member.

Story:
L is a world-renowned detective who takes on the challenge of catching the serial killer known only as Kira. In his investigation L becomes highly suspicious of Light Yagami, and makes it his goal to prove that Light is Kira.

How he joined the game:
L after he wrote his name in the Death Note to stop Kira from killing him was appeared infront of an angel. The angel then gave L a second chance at life telling him about the game that is about to begin. L refused at first but later accepted as he discovered that Kira was Light Yagami and decided to end this once and for all.

Nope, I was surprised as well. But the writers of Death note states:
